What's the value add of "Wall Street?"

If it's trading that's all electronic and free right? Plus aren't the exchanges focused on that. Wall Street facilitates trading (or did at least) via proprietary trading which means they make money from your flow.

Is it research? (just kidding)

Is it investment banking? That helps companies but doesn't do much for customers.

They do manage assets. Is their performance great?

Of course they have made lots of money. Often at the expense of someone else. It might be wise to own equity in such firms but you could also own equity in companies like Apple which are actually adding value on a daily basis.

I don't know what Wall Street is supposed to stand for anymore to anyone who is outside of it.

Bien sûr, ils ont fait beaucoup d'argent. Souvent au détriment de quelqu'un d'autre. Il pourrait être sage de fonds propres dans de telles entreprises, mais vous pouvez aussi posséder l'équité dans des entreprises comme Apple qui sont effectivement ajouter de la valeur sur une base quotidienne....
